Your first assignment will be to go to a community event you normally wouldn’t go to. A good example might be a city council meeting, a church festival, or an ethnic market. The key to this project is to do something you’ve never done before and would never think of or want to do in a place you don’t normally go.
While at the event, record seven different observations. Record one observation for each of the following topics: Governments/Utopias, Socio-Economies, Commerce, Food, Politics, Media and Waste. You must record each of your seven observations in any medium of your choice including: Photography, Illustration, Video or Sound. You can mix and match recording methods. Be prepared to present your observations to the class. Photos and Illustrations must be printed out on 8.5″ × 11″.
You will need to upload your observations to a service like Flickr, YouTube and Soundcloud. During the next class each student will be assigned a blog where they will enter their notes and post links to their recorded observations or relevant articles. You also need to type up a short response (500 words or less) about the experience as if you were a reporter telling someone else about the experience.
To organize your assignment post—so I can find it for grading—please title your blog entry Assignment One: Community Observations.
This assignment will be worth 12 points and is due by 1 p.m. on 02.04.16.
